Writing for Children
William Wells Brown
I am currently working on a chapter book about William Wells Brown, a slave who escaped on a bitter cold New Year's Day in 1843. Walking for days in ice and snow, he finally arrived in Cleveland, Ohio.  He worked hard, taught himself how to read and write, and helped many slaves to freedom on the Underground Rail Road.

He became the first African American novelist, as well as an abolitionist, and a public speaker. Once I learned about him, I felt compelled to write about his inspiring life.

I am also working on short magazine pieces, both fiction and nonfiction. My current favorite is about The Raven of Goodell Creek, who steals windshield wipers off of cars! Its a true story: I saw him do it with my own eyes!
